    While Chicago is known for its pizza, what might not be common knowledge is that the city is home to 4,500 food manufacturing companies.


    And like the rest of the manufacturing world, they are having trouble finding qualified workers for job openings. Not a city to sit idle, it created The Chicagoland Food & Beverage Network (CFBN). The group’s goal is to tap into the collective knowledge of local industry food & beverage players -- big and small – to help identify curriculum needs to train a workforce.

    On “Food Talk with Dani Nierenberg,” Justin Whitmore of Tyson Foods talks about his holistic approach to sustainability, directing big food companies to be the agents, rather than the enemies, of positive change in the food system. “Big food companies have not done a good job of being transparent in their practices[…] And over time, if that transparency is not being done effectively by the companies that are providing the food, trust will erode.”

    PepsiCo is buying plant-based nutritional bar maker Health Warrior as the beverage and snack giant presses deeper into good-for-you products.

    Founded in 2011, Health Warrior makes nutritional bars with natural ingredients such as chia and pumpkin seeds. It also makes a range of other healthy products, such as protein powder.

    For PepsiCo, maker of Doritos and Mountain Dew, the deal furthers the company's evolution into healthier items as customers increasingly demand alternatives to sugary beverages and junk food.

    Dairy Farmers of America has invested in SomaDetect, a dairy technology startup, to help farmers utilize artificial intelligence to more closely monitor the health of their herd and improve milk quality.

    “This is a potentially game-changing technology for our farmers and the industry as it allows dairy farmers to know the health of each cow and quality of milk in real time,” says David Darr, president, farm services at DFA. “With access to better data, our farmers can make more knowledgeable decisions, which is a huge value.”
